A recent presentation of evidence that shows how our governmental regulators do not actually regulate the industries which they are assigned to regulate, is the finance documentary "The China Hustle" which is a 2017 finance documentary produced by Magnolia Pictures and directed by Jed Rothstein. The documentary reveals systematic and formulaic decades-long securities fraud by domestic and foreign companies listed on the US stock market. The documentary exposes the illegitimacies within the regulatory body of the SEC, and also exposes how the lawyers, auditors and regulators don't actually do their jobs in that they don't actually do what they purport to do regarding safeguarding SEC policy requirements. This is exposed by the use of actual evidence in the form of verbal testimony by actual lawyers, auditors and other relevant participants.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.
Animal agriculture contributes to species extinction in many ways. In addition to the monumental habitat destruction caused by clearing forests and converting land to grow feed crops and for animal grazing, predators and "competition" species are frequently targeted and hunted because of a perceived threat to livestock profits. The widespread use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers used in the production of feed crops often interferes with the reproductive systems of animals and poison waterways. The overexploitation of wild species through commercial fishing, bushmeat trade as well as animal agriculture’s impact on climate change, all contribute to global depletion of species and resources.
The companies who don't want to talk about this include all the companies who make millions of dollars from selling meat (land meat and sea meat), as well as the large green "non-profit" movements who don't want to lose their fundraising support and revenue from licensing their logo. Clearly this area requires governmental regulation, however the politicians and lawmakers in congress who have the ability to effect the change cannot seem to resist the mighty dollar waving at them by the industrial lobbyists. We understand that the change we seek - a complete overhaul and restructuring of how we consume Earth's resources - is at the expense of the millionaire companies within the animal agricultural industry. We understand the sensitivity of this topic. We believe a regulation can be reached which would substantially decrease the consumption of animals (land and sea).

When dolphins and whales return to the surface to breathe, they fertilize tiny marine clouds in the ocean called phytoplankton, which every year absorb 4 times the amount of carbon dioxide than the amazon rain forest does, and generates up to 85% of the oxygen we breathe.
Marine plants & marine vegetation - per acre these coastal plants store up to 20x more carbon than forests on land - in fact 93% of all Earth's CO2 is stored in our oceans with the help of marine vegetation algae and coral, and losing just 1% of this ecosystem is equivalent to releasing the emissions of 97 Million tons of carbon from cars (source: Dr. Peter Macreadi - The Future of Blue Carbon Science). The continued extraction of fish is deforesting our oceans - by not only removing the fish but the methods of removal such as trawling are devastating to the ecosystem.
Scientists predict loss of 90% of coral reefs by year 2050 - fish are vital to keep coral reefs alive. The ecosystem on coral reefs is heavily based on recycling - when fish excrete that is food for the corals - as fisherman come in and catch the fish not only are the fish suffering but the products that the fish release into the water as food for the corals, the nutrients to replace them and grow them again are lost. Fishing is the major threat. The global fish catch per year is currently at 2.7 trillion - thats 5 million fish killed per minute. No other trade kills more animals in its industry than the fish trade. Bycatch is a product of commercial fishing - it is major global problem and threat to our oceans and all bodies of water. The greatest threat to whales and dolphins is commercial fishing - over 300,000 whales and dolphins are killed every year as bycatch of industrial fishing.
The United Nations Bycatch Mitigation Initiative has had little success implementing its recommendations due to the large amount of commercial fishing vessels (4,600,000) - governments have practically given up on enforcing the UN's recommendations.
The fishing vessels often work with fishing labels (Dolphin Safe Tuna - Earth Island Institute) who claim their fish is free of bycatch fatalities but the reality is they cannot guarantee such claims of safety.
Regarding the issue of plastic in our oceans, fishing vessels discard a massive amount of ropes and lines - 46% of plastic in the great pacific garbage patch is fishing nets. The issue is industrial fishing, not plastic straws and garbage bags at grocery stores - source Lebreton, L,, Slat, B., Ferrari, F. et al: Evidence That The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Is Rapidly Accumulating Plastic, Scientific Reports 8, No. 4666 (March 2018).
The obvious solution is to decrease the current rate of fish consumption. The reason why this solution is not enforced by governments is because it would disrupt the money and profits made by fishing industrialists.
The Massive Conflict of Interest:
One of the founders of the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) was Unilever (a big seafood retailer) - only a very few fisheries haven't been denied certification in the past 20 years - The MSC generates about £30 Million Pounds of income per year, and over 80% of that income comes from licensing their logo on seafood.
Top anti-plastic organizations, such as Plastic Pollution Coalition, supposedly advocate to protect our oceans and fight to reduce plastic in oceans but they are not sending the simple and honest message - instead they are pushing to eliminate plastic straws from restaurants and plastic bags in grocery stores. This is a false message - the more truthful message is "decrease your fish consumption" - the major cause of deaths of sea turtles is industrial fishing - a global study estimated a conservative 1000 sea turtle deaths per year from plastic, compared to in the US alone 250,000 sea turtles each year are captured injured or killed due to industrial fishing vessels - a video of a sea turtle with a straw in its nose goes viral, but the real issue is not talked about... why? The reason is money & business. It is a tightly knit network. Of course they dont talk about fishing nets - the Plastic Pollution Coalition is the same organization as the Earth Island Institute which is behind the Dolphin Safe Tuna label, who works with the fishing industry to sell more seafood - it is very simple.
Not only are our governments not doing anything to regulate industrial fishing, they are actually using taxpayer dollars to subsidize commercial fleets to compete with poor local artisan fishermen who almost always have no access to official aid programs - the subsidized boats are much bigger with superior equipment and designed to catch more than those belonging to small-scale fishermen.
To further illustrate how industrial fishing is by far the most damaging to our ecosystem compared to plastic pollution, it is also far more damaging than oil pollution:
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was an industrial disaster that began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect and lasted until 19 September 2010 - it is considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry - the US Federal Government estimated total discharge at 210 million US gallons (4.9 million barrels). - the fishing industry in the Gulf of Mexico killed more fish and animals in one day than the Deepwater Horizon oil spill did in months. Industrial fishing is destroying the blue carbon ecosystem.
